In a galaxy very, very, very, very far away there lived a ruthless race of beings known as… Spaceballs
With rumors of Spaceballs 2 floating around, I thought it would be appropriate to revisit this classic comedy from the king of spoofs, Mel Brooks. He writes, directs and stars in this hilarious take on the Space Opera genre. Cast with comedian gods and goddesses, this timely, and now timeless, comedy brings the absurd undertones of the Star Wars franchise and makes it the main course.
Instead of following the traditional heroes tale, Brook’s approach is to follow the Han Solo archetypal character, Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his trusty sidekick, Barf (John Candy). Their ship, a flying Winnebago, The Eagle 5, takes them from job to job, with presumable habits that leave them broke. Meanwhile, the galaxy’s Nemesis race from Planet Spaceball, is running out of air, and their president Skroob (Mel Brooks) and his right hand man, Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) have devised a plan to steal planet Druidia’s Air. A wrench is thrown into everyone’s plan when Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) runs away from her arranged marriage to the last prince in the galaxy joined by her personal android, Dot Matrix (Joan Rivers).
With the fairy tale set in motion and Brooks at the helm, the story weaves from ingenious comedy to crude (yet hilarious) slap stick comedy. Paced to sell and keep you on your toes, one of my favorite parts is when they meet Yogurt (Brooks, again), and he begins to sell the rag tag crew on their own merchandise stating, “Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made.”
While I look forward to any new Mel Brooks film, this one will always hold a dear place in my heart.
